THOMASVILLE COMMUNITY GARDEN - 2011
TENEBRAE / EASTER April 21st - April 24th
Tenebrae literally means "darkness". The service commemorates the suffering and death of Christ, progressing from light to darkness. Ushers come forward to take their light from the Christ Candle. Then light the candle of the worshipper nearest the center aisle.
As the Users bring the cross past each pew during the reading of the scriptures, everyone in the pew extinguishes their candle. Extinguishing the candles symbolizes the fading of loyalty of the disciples and friends of Jesus and also fading of the world as Christ was departing from it. The extinguishing of the central candle signifies the death of Jesus. The service ends after the tolling of the bell with the sanctuary in darkness.
